Frequently Asked Questions

How long are the treatments?
The initial consultation will last between 35 mins to 1 hour depending on which practice you visit. Follow up appointments are approximately 30mins. If you require additional services such as heat moulded orthotics, this may take extra time and will be agreed when booking the appointment.

What is an initial consultation?
This is your first visit. Jane will ask you questions related to your problem/pain, and about your general health and medical background. After which she will examine you. Jane will then discuss what she thinks is causing the problem (diagnosis), what treatment she can offer, and what improvement you can expect (prognosis).

What kind of questions will Jane ask?
Jane will spend some time with you discussing in detail why you have come for treatment. This will include questions such as how long you have had the problem, what makes it better or worse.
Jane will also ask questions about you general medical background and current general health. This may include questions about what medication you take, whether you have had any accidents or surgery, your lifestyle and occupation.

Why does the Osteopath need to know about my medical background?
It is very important Jane has as much information as possible to decide whether it is safe and appropriate to treat you. It will also help her formulate an appropriate examination plan, diagnosis and prognosis.

Usually musculoskeletal pain is a simple mechanical problem that responds well to osteopathic treatment. However, occasionally an ache or pain may be caused by a more serious underlying problem. Jane may refer you for further tests such as blood tests and x-rays to rule this out, or for urgent medical treatment if necessary.

All your answers and your notes will remain confidential according to the Data Protection Act 1988. If Jane feels it is necessary to contact your G.P. (or anyone else) she will ask for your written consent first.

Will I have to get undressed?
You will be asked to remove outer garments, so wear something you are comfortable in, a vest top or similar, and shorts are fine.
There are towels and/or gowns available, and Jane will leave the room for you to dress and undress if required.
